As of December 1, 2016 ICANN’s new Transfer Policy officially went into effect. The updated policy now includes rules regarding changing or updating the following fields:

  • Registrants first name
  • Registrants last name
  • Registrants email address
  • Organization name

How does this affect me?

Whenever a Change of Registrant process is triggered, an email is sent to possibly both parties if applicable confirming that the update has taken place. The domain will then be placed in a 60-day transfer lock. A domain name cannot be transferred during that period. Once the 60-day transfer lock has expired a domain name can then be transferred from one registrar to another.

As an example, if you change the registrant email address on a domain name that has previously been registered, the new email address will receive an email to confirm that the email address is valid. Additionally, both the former and the new email addresses will receive a confirmation that the change has occurred as well as notice of the 60-day transfer lock.

Please plan accordingly if you need to update any of this information within your whois information. If you have any questions please feel free to open a support ticket.
